ChatGPT Now Builds Calculators and Charts Inside the Chat. Test One Before You Quote Off It.

OpenAI rolled out a new look for ChatGPT on Wednesday, along with a new model called GPT-6. They're calling the new look Intelligent UI. Instead of a wall of text, ChatGPT can now draw diagrams, make charts you can edit, and build a little calculator right inside the conversation, with buttons you tap. Paid accounts got it Wednesday. Free and Go accounts get it today. OpenAI's own demos were things like a savings calculator and a hiking map.

For a small shop that's useful. Picture asking for a calculator that takes square feet, the type of material, and the number of coats, then spits out a rough painting price. Or a quick estimator for a service call that adds up mileage and labor. That's stuff people usually try to build in a spreadsheet on a Sunday night and never finish. I've watched people in my workshops lose a whole afternoon to that exact spreadsheet.

The problem is how finished it looks

A calculator with clean buttons looks like software somebody tested. Nobody did. ChatGPT wrote the formula a minute ago based on your description, and if you described the job a little off, or it guessed at a rate you never gave it, you get an answer that looks sure of itself and is wrong. A wrong number in a text box is easy to catch. A wrong number on a nice little calculator gets trusted.

Here's the part that worries me. If a quote goes out to a customer in Perrysburg and it's low by 15 percent, that's your money, and nobody is going to reimburse you because the chart looked great.

The ten minute test

Before anyone at your shop uses one of these for a real quote, pull up three jobs you already priced and finished, so you know what the right number was. Run each one through the calculator. If it's off on even one, ask ChatGPT to show you the math it's using, step by step, and look for the number it made up. It'll often fill in a labor rate, a tax rate, or a markup you never told it. Type in your real ones yourself and lock them.

Then save the three test jobs somewhere. When ChatGPT changes something next month, and it will, you can run the same three again in two minutes and see if the answers moved.

Your team gets it today

Free accounts get the new interface today, which means anybody at your shop with a personal ChatGPT login can start building calculators and pasting the results into emails. Most of them will do it with good intentions. If you haven't written down which tools your people can use and what goes in them, my post on writing an AI policy will take you an afternoon.

This is the kind of thing I walk through in my workshops. We build one of these calculators together, break it on purpose, and then set up the check so it stays honest. If you want that for your team, it's an easy conversation to start.

I run AI workshops and one-on-one AI consultations for companies around Toledo, Northwest Ohio, and Southeast Michigan. If you want help building a calculator your team can trust, or checking one somebody already built, email me and we'll find a time.
